There's been a lot of hoopla at the Detroit Auto Show about hybrid and electric cars and how they can boost gas mileage and lessen the impact on the environment; not so much talk about the shift to smaller and lighter cars that are being manufactured. A car’s weight accounts for about two-thirds of the energy needed to make it move, so the carmakers say slimming down seems an easy way to boost fuel economy, without having to pay a hefty price for a vehicle.
